Rail trails feel easy for a reason: trains needed steady grades and broad curves. On the Banks–Vernonia State Trail, that engineering now lets riders move through deep Oregon forest without the abrupt climbs of surrounding roads. The old corridor still tells its own story through trestles and railway geometry, but its new rhythm is set by conversations, picnics and the sound of tires beneath the trees.
